Django vs Flask and advanced scalable python web development in 2019

Hello everyone, from last year since I completed my high school I want to pursue my carrier in web development and data science. So, I figure out python as one of the best options because Professionally, Python is great for backend web development, data analysis, artificial intelligence, and scientific computing. I started from one of the best flask tutorials the flask mega tutorial, and in Python, Django vs flask is one of the hot topics for an advanced scalable python web development 2019

In the early days, everything was quite easy, and it’s a fun building web application using python and flask, but as I start to dive deeper into advanced, scalable Python web development using flask and Django, I was in a dilemma of Django vs. flask.

however, It’s difficult to choose the best, so let’s try to understand the background and make a quick comparison to figure out where Django and flask stand in 2019.

Background

Both Django and Flask are based on Web Server Gateway Interface (WSGI) toolkit and Jinja2 template engine. Django is a full-stack web framework for Python, whereas Flask is a lightweight and extensible Python web framework. Django is developed based on a batteries-included approach.

It enables programmers to accomplish everyday web development tasks without using third-party tools and libraries and among the developer community Flask, and Django popularity is only predictable through usage and uses cases. Hence, it becomes essential for web developers to understand the major differences between Flask vs. Django.

Architectural differences between Django and flask?

Django is a full-stack Python web framework which means that it had native support for standard functionality like user authentication, URL routing, and database schema migration. On the other hand, Flask is a mico-framework. It lacks some of the built-in features provided by Django. However, it helps developers to keep the core of a web application extensible and straightforward, and due to its simple architecture, it provides developers total control over the core functionality of web application written in python.

Features

Now, let's compare Flask and Django based on the features that ship with the core framework.

django vs flask

Database

Django ships simple yet powerful ORM (Object Relational Mapping) with the core framework that supports some relational databases out-of-the-box SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Oracle. However, Flask is flexible it requires developers to work with databases and perform database operations through SQLAlchemy and provide developers to choose among the desired choice of database structure, Flask connects to MySQL, Alembic, SQLAlchemy, and Mango Engine easily.

User Authentication

Django provides native support for account management(via the User model) through token-based sessions and on the other hand Flask comes with cookie-based sessions which itself is an extensive network for account management, authentication, and authorization. However, cookie-based sessions can also get enabled in Django.

Routing and URL Pattern

Django framework reviews a URL pattern based on the response object, which holds the HTTP request information, is passed to a view and that view is then invoked. Anytime you need access to the request object, you must explicitly pass it around. Flask uses Werkzeug, which provides URL routing and request/response handling. The request object is global in Flask, so you can access it much easier (as long as you import it).

Admin controls

Unlike Flask, Django makes it easier for users to handle everyday project administration tasks by providing a ready-to-use one of the best python CMS for Django admin control. It further generates the functional admin module automatically based on project models.

Templating

Flask is developed based on the Jinja2 template engine. As a fully-featured template engine for Python. On the other hand, Django comes with a built-in template engine that enables developers to define a web application’s user-facing layer without putting extra time and effort.

However, Django also supports Jinja2 templating, and thus it provides developers the option to import and customize the templating engine. Moreover, built-in support for bootstrap in the python flask framework is native.

Architectural differences between Django and flask

Flexibility

Django helps developers to build a variety of web applications without using third-party tools and libraries. But the developers lack any option to make changes to the modules provided by Django. Hence, developers have to build web applications by using the built-in features provided by the web framework.

On the other hand, Flask is a micro but extensible web framework. It enables developers to build web applications more flexibly by using several widely used web development tools and libraries also developers can modify and extend built-in features provided by the web framework. (example: Customising the Flask Response Class). Many beginners even find it easier to learn Flask than Django due to its simple and customizable architecture.

Conclusion

Django is a full-stack Python framework for web development with inclusive tools and libraries which support rapid development and web apps. The developers can take advantage of the robust features provided by Django to build and deploy complex. On the other hand, Flaks is a mico but extensible web framework which provides developer flexibility.

On the whole, both Django and Flask are widely used open-source web frameworks for Python. It depends on usage and uses cases which framework suits best for you.
